The Allied Health Professions Federation, of which BIOS is a member, has been discussing practical ways to address the issues raised recently as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. Each professional body has made its own statement or commitment to address equality and the ongoing racism that our BAME members face on a daily basis.

The leaders of all the AHP professions have been discussing what we collectively could do and agree that one area of focus for all of us is supporting leadership development for BAME members to help shape the future of our professional associations.

As a result, we have agreed to fund places on the Future Leaders Programme developed by the British Dietetic Association which has been Approved by the Institute of Leadership and Management.

This programme covers strategic corporate issues such as finance, governance, leadership skills, risk management and many other aspects that will help prepare you to become more involved in your association. BIOS functions due to the hard work done by Trustees and Council Members and members of our Leaders of the Orthoptic Profession (LOOP) steering group and the Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC). We would expect this training to provide ideal preparation for a future role supporting the future of BIOS.

The programme is free to successful applicants. The time commitment is estimated to be around 50-60 hours spread over approximately a 6 month period. There will be mainly online learning with others, some of it during the week, but expectation that some of the learning is self-directed in your own time.

If successful, you will join a mixed cohort of BAME and non-BAME colleagues.
