BIOS offers a range of membership options to suit all prospective members.

If you are qualified to be a member of BIOS, then we want you to be a member: it’s as simple as that.

The BIOS membership year runs from 1 January – 31 December. Student membership, which is free of charge, is a one-off and runs until you graduate. In the year that an orthoptist graduates, we offer Full membership at no charge until 31 December of that year. You will need to tell us that this applies to you, as the unversities do not always tell us.

Orthoptists in their first full year of practice are eligible for a substantial discount on the price: if you think this may apply to you, please contact the office for more information.

This level carries all membership and voting privileges, and is for all qualified orthoptists who do not qualify for one of the other membership levels.

This level is open to members who work in the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar only. It carries all the rights of standard Full membership except one: these members cannot belong to British Orthoptic Society Trade Union, and are therefore liable for a reduced fee.

This level is for two groups: those who are are academic orthoptists; and those whose employment as orthoptists generates earnings below the UK personal tax-free allowance.  It has all the benefits of Full membership.

Overseas membership is for qualified members who live and practice outside the British Isles and Gibraltar.

This level is for qualified orthoptists who are currently not practising in any capacity.

This level is for assistants/technicians who are accountable to and/or managed by an orthoptist.

Retired membership is for those orthoptists who have retired and no longer practise in any capacity.
