World Orthoptic Day 2022
World Orthoptic Day was, as always, a fantastic celebration of the orthoptic profession around the world. Orthoptists took to social media to promote the profession and share what they’ve been doing in their work places to celebrate.
In particular the IOA’s Orthoptic Selfie competition and this year’s Workout Challenge caught peoples’ imaginations, with some fantastic entries coming in from all around the world.
Here’s a few of our favourites:
- Some improvised occlusion in Galway
- Eye-shaped exercises in Stockport
- A video showcasing the breadth of orthoptic work from the team at Lancashire Hospitals
- An Incredible use of prisms at Alder Hey
- The Manchester Orthoptic ‘Queens of the Jungle’
- Orthoptists in the North Midlands promoting active lifestyles
- Our New Grad Rep Holly demonstrating an orthoptic press up challenge
- … and this
We received support form across healthcare, including professional bodies, CAHPOs, other AHPs and, via the Northern Ireland Orthoptics Twitter account, a message from the Minister of Health.

Net Zero NHS
Alongside the IOA’s themes for the day, we took the opportunity to formally launch our sustainability pages, designed to encourage orthoptists to take action towards achieving a Net Zero NHS.
Orthoptists are part of a much larger AHP care group, made up of 14 distinct professions, working across the NHS. Amending the way we work and our actions at home, even in small ways, will help build towards the target of being Net Zero. These are small things that we can try and change within our own Orthoptic/Ophthalmology departments, but will overall help change the bigger picture for our NHS.
