Background
Orthoptists are extremely well placed within eye care services to take on extended role practice in the field of paediatric Ophthalmology. Our ability to effectively communicate with paediatric patients and their parents and carers as well as our intricate knowledge of strabismus and associated disorders means that Orthoptists already have a good theoretical basis from which to develop.
Paediatric ophthalmology is unlike adult sub-specialist areas of ophthalmology in that it covers the full spectrum of ophthalmic disease from the adnexa and anterior segment through to the posterior segment and beyond.
Aim
To provide a platform for continued professional development and share knowledge as well as promote this sub-specialist area and the valuable work Orthoptists can and are doing in this area.
Purpose
As well as providing national guidance and resources for clinicians working in paediatric ophthalmology. The purpose of the CAG is to provide a forum for discussion, share best practice and learning and also to incorporate several areas of existing extended scope practice into one CAG to provide a broader network with more members leading to a greater presence nationally. The following areas fall within the Paediatric Ophthalmology CAG:
- JIA screening
- Lumps and bumps clinics
- Refractions
- General paediatric ophthalmology- Extended role practice
- Highly specialist areas- i.e. paediatric cataracts, paediatric glaucoma
