An agreement on new flexible working rights aimed at giving NHS staff a better work-life balance is announced today (Tuesday) by health unions and NHS employers. The deal will make it easier for workers to request flexible working arrangements including a right to do so from the first day staff are employed in the NHS. NHS staff in the rest of the UK will be “bewildered” as they contrast the pay offer in Scotland with plans for the rest of the UK, the 14 NHS unions have told the Prime Minister. BOSTU is working alongside the other 13 unions covered by Agenda for Change for a significant pay rise for NHS staff, that is delivered early and fully funded. This is crucial to recognise the loss in pay that has come from a decade of austerity, and the value of NHS staff that has been so clearly demonstrated during the pandemic. BIOS welcomes the publication of the NHS England’s People Plan as further recognition of the value of NHS staff and the need to provide them with greater support. However, while the plan sets out some positive measures, there remains a lack of real detail on key issues, such as addressing staff shortages and the role of allied health professionals.
