HeartUnions week this year takes place from 14 to 20 February 2022. A week of activity throughout England and Wales that highlights the good work that unions do every day to offer everyone a voice at work. Heart Unions is our chance to tell the story about why unions are vital for everyone at work, and encourage people who aren't yet in a union to join. Every year it's a chance for reps and activists to publicise what they've been doing and make the case for union membership. New NHS flexible working rights in bid to improve work-life balance and retain staff

2021-06-30T12:01:04+01:00

An agreement on new flexible working rights aimed at giving NHS staff a better work-life balance is announced today (Tuesday) by health unions and NHS employers. The deal will make it easier for workers to request flexible working arrangements including a right to do so from the first day staff are employed in the NHS. It is expected to help the NHS recruit and retain health workers. The agreement comes at a time when many health employers and their staff are beginning to consider new ways of working. The government has already promised a consultation on work flexibility for all UK workplaces. Poor work-life [...]

Create colourful window displays to support NHS staff on pay rise due date, say health unions

2021-03-31T15:58:46+01:00

Families and individuals across the UK are being urged by health unions, including BOS TU, to create colourful window displays in their homes and workplaces today to show support for NHS staff on the day they should have been getting a pay rise. Artworks designed by children’s illustrators and writers are part of a growing collection of posters available to download from a campaign page designed by the 14 unions, who between them represent more than a million health workers across the UK. This includes drawings from Nick Sharratt, whose books include Shark in the Park, Ketchup on Your Cornflakes? and the You Choose [...]

Government must “reconsider urgently” 1% NHS pay proposal, all health unions tell PM

2021-03-26T15:28:38+01:00

NHS staff in the rest of the UK will be “bewildered” as they contrast the pay offer in Scotland with plans for the rest of the UK, the 14 NHS unions have told the Prime Minister. The representatives of 1.3 million NHS workers have today (Thursday) written to Boris Johnson asking to meet with him and his officials to find a way forward. Three weeks ago, the Department of Health and Social Care signalled its intention to award a 1% pay rise later this year following the outcome of the NHS pay review body, blaming the current state of public finances. Today’s letter reminds the government of the [...]

BOSTU supports the #WithNHSStaff campaign for fair pay

2022-03-23T10:43:43+01:00

BOSTU is working alongside the other 13 unions covered by Agenda for Change for a significant pay rise for NHS staff, that is delivered early and fully funded. This is crucial to recognise the loss in pay that has come from a decade of austerity, and the value of NHS staff that has been so clearly demonstrated during the pandemic. With recruitment and retention a key government target, fair pay is needed to ensure the NHS is sustainable into the future. To get this message to politicians, we are asking members to show that we are all #WithNHSStaff: write to your [...]

BIOS responds to the NHS People Plan

2020-08-03T06:41:47+01:00

BIOS welcomes the publication of the NHS England’s People Plan as further recognition of the value of NHS staff and the need to provide them with greater support. However, while the plan sets out some positive measures, there remains a lack of real detail on key issues, such as addressing staff shortages and the role of allied health professionals. The Plan offers up some positive measures to support staff, particularly welcome given the increased pressure many have been throughout the response to COVID-19. This includes further support for staff health and wellbeing, a commitment to tackle systemic inequalities and make [...]

Moving forward on NHS pay

2020-07-03T13:13:03+01:00

It is time to give NHS staff a meaningful pay rise and recognise the true value of their work. Today the 14 health unions representing NHS staff on the ‘Agenda for Change’ pay system have written to the Chancellor and Prime Minister to call for the next NHS pay round and the resulting settlement to be brought forward. Waiting until 2021 is not acceptable. The last few months have shone a light on the essential contribution NHS workers make. They have demonstrated immense strength in the face of adversity and the public has shown great appreciation for their work. There is a unique [...]

Psychological First Aid

2020-06-26T14:28:56+01:00

In response to an increasing number of calls and messages reaching out for support during these very uncertain times BIOS considers it vitally important to protect the health, safety and well being of our members. Psychological first aid is a humane supportive response to a fellow human being who is suffering and may need support in the wake of exposure to a potentially traumatic and emergency event such as the Covid pandemic. It entails basic non-intrusive pragmatic care with a focus on listening but not forcing talk, assessing needs and concerns, ensuring that basic needs are met and encouraging social [...]
