Response to the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan

2023-07-07T11:09:49+01:00

The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan recognises many of the challenges facing the workforce in England in the coming years. We welcome the move to address issues with recruitment and retention but this will need to be underpinned with adequate funding, both to increase workforce numbers and to ensure staff are sufficiently compensated, if these plans are to be realised. Train Key points: Education and training places for the AHP workforce are estimated to need to grow by 19–25% by 2030/31. More than a third of AHPs could train through apprenticeships, compared to 6% now Increasing the number of [...]

BOSTU members accept NHS England pay offer

2023-04-20T14:34:42+01:00

BOSTU members have voted to accept the revised NHS pay offer in England. In the consultation of all members working in the NHS in England, 577 members cast a vote, a turnout of 60%, with 80% voting to accept and 20% voting to reject.  The offer covers two pay years – an additional one-off amount for 2022/23 and a 5% wage rise (10.4% for the lowest paid) for 2023/24. BIOS had recommended acceptance of the offer, which came out of the pay talks involving unions, employers and ministers in March. So far, UNISON members have also voted to accept the [...]

Retirement calculator (Scottish members)

2023-02-28T14:41:53+01:00

Retirement calculator (Scottish members) A retirement calculator that helps people understand the pension implications of the McCloud ruling is now live for 12 different pension schemes, the Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) has announced. Plans for the calculator were first announced in 2022 in response to the 2018 McCloud ruling, which found that changes to the public sector pensions were discriminatory on the grounds of age. The judgement meant that some public sector pension scheme members have the choice between two different types of benefits: legacy schemes or reformed schemes. The retirement calculator therefore aims to help scheme members eligible for the 2015 [...]

BOSTU joins with health unions calling for direct pay talks with ministers

2023-01-11T13:29:50+01:00

Ongoing disputes make it impossible to submit evidence to NHS pay review body, say health unions. Health unions won’t be submitting joint evidence to the NHS pay review body for the next wage round while the current industrial disputes remain unresolved, it has been announced today (Wednesday). Instead, BOSTU have joined with 13 other unions – representing more than one million ambulance staff, nurses, porters, healthcare assistants, physiotherapists and other NHS workers in England – to call for direct pay talks with ministers. Unions believe the lengthy pay review body process is not able to deliver what is needed right [...]

BOSTU Summary

2023-01-10T11:45:25+01:00

BOSTU SUMMARY It’s been a busy couple of months for the BOSTU board. England, Wales, and Scotland were all surveyed on the Pay offer, Northern Ireland was not surveyed at that time due to uncertainty surrounding funding for the pay deal. Most members chose not to take part in strike action and Scotland decided to accept the revised offer on the table. We as Orthoptists will therefore not be taking part in any planned strike action but you can however show support to those colleagues who are by following our guide previously published. Unions are stronger when they stand together. [...]

NHS unions stand #WithNHSStaff taking action on pay and staffing

2022-12-15T08:20:22+01:00

NHS trade unions have confirmed their support for all health workers taking industrial action on pay and staffing this winter. Health unions recognise the urgent need for pay investment to prevent more staff leaving the NHS and further damage to patient care. Despite calls for Government to address the crisis through an urgent retention package, Ministers imposed pay rises well under inflation, well short of what is needed to help health workers through the current cost of living crisis, and well below the amount needed to stop people leaving and maintain safe and effective standards of care While some unions [...]

BIOS release definition on professional leadership

2022-11-28T11:47:46+01:00

BIOS and BOS TU have released the following definition of professional leadership: British and Irish Orthoptic Society definition of professional leadership Professional leadership for an orthoptist or orthoptists can only be provided by an orthoptist. Unlike clinical leadership or operational management, professional leadership requires in-depth knowledge of the profession and a link to the relevant professional body. A professional leader will have an understanding of the strategy of both the employing organisation and the relevant professional body, and have the freedom and autonomy to ensure the staff they lead work in a way which complies with both. They will [...]

BOSTU Pay offer statement

2022-07-22T11:58:43+01:00

The PRB has recommended that every NHS pay point should increase by £1,400. This announcement covers all NHS staff groups other than doctors. The PRB have also recommended that staff in Band 6 and 7 should get 4% instead of £1,400, where this is higher. The government has accepted those recommendations. This means once again the PRB process and the government’s decisions have left NHS staff with another real-terms pay cut. And because the government would not negotiate with us this is not a pay ‘offer’– the government will move to implement it whether or not you want to accept [...]

Time to #GetSerious on NHS Pay

2022-03-30T11:56:21+01:00

NHS Pay negotiations are here again and BOSTU are working alongside our fellow NHS Staff Side Trade Unions to get the best deal for members. There is a day of action planned on 1 April 2022 where we are encouraging members to speak to colleagues about NHS Pay and take action by contacting their local MP. We have a number of digital resources (including posters that can be printed out) here. Get in touch with your local MP and tell them why NHS Staff deserve a pay rise. Not sure who your local MP is and how to contact them? [...]

BOSTU Update

2022-03-09T14:41:34+01:00

Joint NHS Union react to RCN pay breach The NHS unions are deeply disappointed that the RCN has taken the decision to back out of the collective position on NHS pay agreed by everyone in January and confirmed in a formal vote of the Staff Council staff side. All 14 unions (including BIOS) signed up to the collective call for an urgent NHS retention package, with an inflation busting pay rise at its heart. This package, which aims to help the NHS hold on to increasingly disillusioned staff, formed the basis of the joint union evidence submitted to the NHS [...]
