Pride month is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate those who are LGBTQ+. That might include themselves, but it’s also about celebrating those around you, including your colleagues. It’s a time to reflect on the progress that has been made towards a more inclusive society while acknowledging that Pride is not just a celebration, but a protest. There is still a lot to do to ensure that all our LGBTQ+ colleagues, patients, friends and family, feel safe, included and celebrated.

Here are some things you can do this Pride month (and all year) to become an active ally of the LGBTQ+ community, whether you are a part of the community or a supporter.

Learn – Look up what you don’t understand. Why not start with the “ABC of LGBT+ Inclusing Communication – A guide for health and social care profressionals“.

Be open about your support – Speak up about being an ally. Wear your NHS rainbow badge and celebrate pride.

Challenge discrimination and push for inclusivity – If you hear or see something offensive, speak up. Help fight for inclusive policies.

Support networks – Sign up to your Trust’s LGBTQ+ Staff Network. Staff networks need active allies in order to be successful, so get involved!

Share your pronouns – Including your pronouns in your email signature could make it easier for a colleague to share their pronouns with you. Pronouns are words we use in everyday language to refer to ourselves or others. The most common pronouns are she/her, he/him and they/them.

Why not become a BIOS EDI Champion (equality, diversity and inclusion)?  Our aim is to have a Champion in each department, to foster a culture of inclusion throughout the profession. Email [email protected] if you are interested or for more information.
