BIOS Statement on recent unrest across UK
BIOS is appalled by the recent and continued violence that has been displayed over the last week across the UK and joins the TUC in condemning all acts of racism and discrimination. Read the full TUC statement at https://www.tuc.org.uk/news/tuc-anti-far-right-statement.
We stand in support of our staff, members and partners in those communities affected and recognise the impact this unrest will have on individuals both at work and at home.
Images of these events have been upsetting and worrying to all but especially those who feel at risk because of their religion or ethnicity. We are proud of the diversity within our profession and reject attempts to sow division and as such encourage our members to check in with colleagues and the wider community in support of each other. All members of BIOS are also encouraged to access any resources provided by their employers and talk to managers for local support and actions at this time. This may include buddy schemes and flexible working arrangements where applicable. If additional support is required for specific work-related issues, we encourage members to reach out to their local BOSTU representative.
We understand working within this environment is challenging and appreciate the dedication and duty of care displayed by our members to patients and the public at this difficult time. Resources to support can be found at NHS England https://www.england.nhs.uk/supporting-our-nhs-people.
If racism is affecting your mental health Mind, the mental health charity can offer support https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/racism-and-mental-health/
In support of further actions to tackle racism, information may be found at Race Equality Matters website https://www.raceequalitymatters.com/
We would like to take this opportunity to reassure members of BIOS commitment to its continued development of its Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity strategy in the prevention of discrimination of any individual or community due to any protected characteristic.
