World Orthoptic Day falls on the first Monday of each June and is a day when orthoptists globally promote their profession and cerebrate the fantastic work they do.
It is organised by the International Orthoptic Association (IOA), made up of 15 member national professional organisations and 6 associate member organisations.
World Orthoptic Day 2024 – ‘Orthoptists making a difference’
As always, we’ll be active on social media throughout the day, ready to share your posts and promote the profession as much as possible. We’ll also be reporting back via Parallel Vision and on the website, so let us know what you’re up to!

Much of the fun on World Orthoptic Day is online. If you’re not already active on social media, there could not be a more perfect time to start! More Orthoptists on social media means more people talking about orthoptics – this can only be a good thing for the profession.

Brand New Video Launch!
We’re also taking the opportunity to launch a brand new video, filmed recently at Birmingham and Midlands Eye Centre, to celebrate the incredible impact of orthoptists!

International Orthoptic Association Video Competition
As the theme for this year is “Orthoptists making a difference”. The IOA are running a video contest around his theme, with the videos used to promote Orthoptic internationally.
The challenge is to make a video, no longer than 1 minute, in which you show how YOU as an orthoptist make a difference – in the lives of your patients, in your health community, in the orthoptic community, etc.
The Grand Prize is a complementary conference registration for one person for all days of the IOA congress in Brisbane, Australia, June 27th-29th 2025!
World Orthoptic Day in Scotland
This year, NHS Education Scotland is really getting in on the act:
- Orthoptist Sarah Brown is delivering an online DYW Live session to schools to promote Orthoptic careers
- They’ll also be using the day to promote their orthoptpic careers resources, including their recent ‘Day in the life of an orthoptist’ video, below.
