Support for Vision Research – The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers
The Master’s Medal continues to be aimed at people in the very first stages of their research career i.e. those currently studying for higher-level degrees or within 1 year of achieving a Doctorate.

The Ruskell Medal seeks to reward research which makes a significant difference to our understanding of vision, by applicants with up to 7 years’ post-doctoral experience.

The closing date for applications for the Ruskell and Master’s Medals is 6pm on Monday 5 August 2024.
WCSM Silver Medal
We are also open to nominations for the WCSM individual Silver Medal. The criteria for this medal have changed in the last year and candidates may now self-nominate, or be proposed by a colleague or colleagues, for demonstrating significant and sustained commitment to better vision in at least one of the following fields: Education, Research, Innovation or Clinical Leadership over a period of more than 7years. We expect assessment of entries for the WCSM Silver Medal to extend into the New Year, with any award being made at the WCSM Court Lunch in March 2025.
A Silver Medal for Innovation by a lab or corporate team is also available but we expect that the first such award will not be made until later in 2025.
SilverMedals – The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers
The Ruskell and the Master’s Medals will be awarded at our Court Lunch in Apothecaries’ Hall in London on Wednesday 2 October 2024. The winners will be able to meet leading names and have the opportunity to develop networks across the eye health and sight loss sectors. Both Bronze medals come with a purse of £750 and the awards will be given as much publicity as possible. A formal opportunity will be offered for medal winners to talk about their work within the 12 months following the award.

The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers is a Livery Company in the City of London and the oldest optical organisation in the world founded in 1629. It has launched a new charity this week, to coincide with World Sight Day.
As an Orthoptist you are entitled to become be part of this livery company. There are a few who have already accepted this honour. It involves becoming a freeman of the Spectacle Makers then you can become freeman of the City of London prior to becoming a Liveryman. The Spectacle Makers meet regularly for networking across the whole optical sector, have social and charitable activities.
