3rd-8th March is National Careers Week (NCW), and we’re grabbing the chance to make a big noise about the fantastic opportunities available in a career in orthoptics.
Find out how you can get involved below. If you have any questions about our visibility and careers work, you get in touch via [email protected].
1. Help us name our new orthoptic mascots!
We’re introducing two new mascots for NCW and are asking children (and orthoptists!) to help us in naming them. We’ve got colouring in sheets, posters, and sticker designs to help you promote this within your department and spread greater awareness about orthoptics.
2. Fill in one of our orthoptic career case studies
We know there is a whole range of career routes available within orthoptics and case studies are a great way to demonstrate this is through case studies from people currently working in orthoptics, as an orthoptist, an orthoptic clinical assistant, or as a lecturer. We’d love to hear how you got into orthoptics, what you’re doing now and what your plans are for the future so that we can share your story on our careers promotion.
3. Become a BIOS Visibility Champion
We’re looking to create a network of enthusiastic orthoptists across the UK and Ireland, happy to attend careers events in their local areas and shout about what a great career it is. If you’re new to this, don’t worry, we can help out with tips and resources to get you started,
Actively promoting orthoptics at these events, or by creating visibility content, is vital for inspiring future professionals and addressing workforce challenges. We encourage all departments to support involvement in this important work. Read our statement here
We already have a live list of upcoming events, accessible at the bottom of the page here [login required]. Please do get in touch if you’re able to help out.
4. Enter our ‘Day in the Life of an Orthoptic Student’ video competition
Students from all four universities are invited to take part in a ‘Day in the Life of an Orthoptic Student’ video competition. Your video should highlight your experiences on the orthoptic course and what makes life as an orthoptic student unique and inspiring. The winner will receive a £100 voucher of your choosing!
Deadline for entries: 23rd February 2025.
