We are pleased to announce registration is now open for our event on Developing the Orthoptic Non Registered Workforce, being held online on Thursday 26 November 2020.
Register now, here.
This event will celebrate both the diverse and generic roles that the orthoptic non registered / support workforce have that contribute to patients’ care pathways in orthoptics and ophthalmology. The event will also seek to understand the training needs of this workforce to help us develop national standards and competencies along with national job profiles to support career development.
Background
There are many terms used for the job roles for support staff who are managed by orthoptists and who contribute so positively to patient care, patient pathways and treatment. Local job descriptions are developed to suit the needs of the local service and across the UK and ROI (except in Wales) there are no national competency frameworks or training packages specifically for this workforce. We do not have a career framework or job profiles on NHS employers for our dedicated non registered workforce unlike many other AHPs.
Health Education England has recognised this as a gap and has provided some financial support to BIOS so the profession to explore this work further across the UK and Ireland. The creation of an online conference was one part of this – we have also recently seconded three orthoptists to carry out further work to support this project. More details are available on this here.
