BOSTU Workplace Employment Relations, Professionalism & Conflict Resolution


With workplace conflict on the increase due to factors like NHS changes and the difficult jobs market, finding a way through is essential. Following a membership survey, BIOS Council agreed that resources be put into face to face training for BOSTU members during 2013.

This workshop is open to all and members from any branch can attend any session - there are other sessions - see the events list for more.

The aim is to review informal and formal ways of resolving issues and work through case studies and real-life examples. We will look at real examples of restructures etc where Heads and Reps are required to work together as team to manage the situation successfully.

The course will be run by Lesley-Anne Baxter, Chair, BIOS & BOSTU and Anita McCallum, BIOS & BOSTU Business Manager. Both are experienced trainers and facilitators and run courses for training providers such as NHS Employers and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Lesley-Anne was non-medical clinical lead for ophthalmology in a department of 68 people. Anita is a Fellow of the CMI and works for the NHS as an interim and is a non-executive director at an Acute Trust.

John Pestle, an industrial relations advisor, will assist us with role playing some real -life scenarios, like restructuring, and help us to uncover ideal roles and steps to handling challenging issues productively.

0915 - 0945 Introductions, purpose and arrangements for the day LAB

0945 - 1015  BIOS/BOSTU update, the professionalism debate and NHS Changes in the light of Francis Report Part 2.

1015 - 1100 SESSION 1- Capability case followed by Managing conflict and working together: Why is some conflict necessary and inevitable? This session will look at the positive sides of differences in opinion and how they can help design better solutions.

1100 – 1115 Break

1115 - 1230  SESSION 2 – Conflict Resolution: Reaching agreement informally. How you build positive relationships at work and learn to read emotions better; we will cover emotional intelligence, building trust and giving feedback.

1230 - 1300 Lunch – opportunity to network and share learnings with others

1300 - 1430 SESSION 3 – Interactive Workshops and Role Play JP/LAB & AM (managers/reps scenarios - e.g. restructuring a department) 

1430 - 1530 Feedback and discussion

The price to non-members includes refreshments and lunch on the day, but EXCLUDES overnight accommodation or travel costs. Cancellations maybe made up to two weeks before the event, if you discover that you cannot attend after that time, you may send another similar delegate in your place.
